It is made clear that, through great determination and skill, the Germans were able to convert what looked like an initial disaster into a success that was unique. However their heavy losses, which the document makes clear, shocked Hitler who decided that, since the paratroops had now lost the advantage of surprise, forbid any future large scale airborne operations - A quite different opinion was reached by the allies, who proceeded to build up their airborne forces!

Fascinating,another Gem for posterity Frederick,Having spent 2 weeks on Crete 25 years ago and visited Suda Bay in particular,very rugged terrain for combat,any detonations spreading rock shrapnel as well as steel i read.this was a treat for me.Two Narratives side by side contextualised it very well.Thanks as ever for you work scouring Europe for your archives.Really do think that a lot of this material could of been lost in time. Thank you!

Props to the Americans for a factual, well detailed report. That they used actual German military tunes and not some evil sounding, sinister music (as was often used in typical propaganda movies) was a nice detail.

I read a bit about this, freiberg wasn't a great general, he was convinced that the German's would come from the sea. Despite a fair amount of evidence to the contrary. He was late to respond. Once the paras appeared. Some units ignored him which is why the German's suffered initially. Interesting film thanks Frederick.

The British and Commonwealth units as well as those early partisan units that could be armed did fight on Crete tbh. Thanks to code breaking the Allies knew where and when to deploy their ships and men where they could fight with best effect. The Royal Navy broke up the Italian portion of the (sea) invasion while the German Falschirmjaeger took very heavy losses in securing the airfields so that the 5th Mountain Div, with their heavy weapons could in be could flown in only after the German Paratroopers had secured the two main airfields, Meleme and Heraklion. It was After that the ability to secure the rest of the island followed in quick order as the Germans repaired and utilized the captured airfield for their own uses.

Not true about the Warsaw uprising. Soviet Army was not omnipotent to help. And even then Armija Krajova refused to cooperate with the Soviet affiliated Armija Ludova. So much of Goebbels propaganda is still around, unbelievable . Thanks for the work you do.

After the war, millions of Germans were starved to death! Wonder why the Germans kept fighting even though it was a lost cause? Because they knew the Truth, that the objective was the destruction of the German people not the Nazis regime!

The Reds are nothing but duplicitous scum. Of course the main Russian objective was to have the Germans wipeout all Polish resistance so the Russians didn’t have to once they took over .

Would the films made by the Polish Resistance been hidden by them and postwar recovered? Or captured by the Germans or Russians and later discovered in Germany or Moscow?

The disconnect between the subject matter of some of these clips with what is actually happening in the war at that time is kind of absurd. I get that it's propaganda, but it's kind of like that picture of a dog sitting at a table in a room that's on fire saying, "This if fine."

And the Poles that hated the Germans so much got what they thought was liberation only to find that they got 8 eight years of Stalin and a total of 45 years of Russian communism.

The closing segment featuring the Warsaw Uprising was an intriguing commentary on that key event in WW2 - considering that (as was pointed out) many historians consider the uprising to mark the onset of the 'Cold War'.

Never knew the fuller historical backdrop of the Warsaw uprising and how that was considered as the start of the Cold War. Fascinating. Also this question...what was the mass rally firing into buildings and the crowd looking for shelter after the DeGaulle footage ?....was that in France and what is the backstory? And finally....on a lighter note....when we see the very last frames of the ceramic factory....why didn't the row of cups fall off when the carrying "rack" was tipped so severely before the person entered the space between the storage racks?

I would like to ask if you have any combat documentaries about the Grossdeutschland infantry or armored divisions in World War II, especially on the Eastern Front. There are not enough documentaries about this division that are popular on RUclips. I hope there are detailed combat documentaries about them.

GREAT STUFF! I recently visited Remargen and I was fascinated to compare the town then with now. At least the twin towers at the bridge end are still there and the topography can still be recognised. The US Sappers seem to have done a good job in replacing the collapsed bridge with the temporary replacement. These reports do an excellent job in transporting one back into those critical days gone by!
